Anne Frank Tour + Jewish Museum & Synagogue

About this experience

Two halves, one booking. The guided walk takes two hours and follows Amsterdam through the occupation of 1940 to 1945: how daily life changed for Jewish families, how Anne Frank became an icon, and how her father Otto Frank came to publish the diary after the war. The guide also covers the February Strike of 1941 and the Hunger Winter of 1944 to 1945, two turning points most visitors have never heard of. The walk starts in the old Jewish neighbourhood and ends close to the Anne Frank House on the Prinsengracht.

The museum half runs at your own pace. The Jewish Cultural Quarter ticket covers four locations within one square kilometre: the Jewish Museum with its children's museum, the 17th-century Portuguese Synagogue, the National Holocaust Museum and the National Holocaust Memorial in the former Hollandsche Schouwburg theatre. The tickets arrive separately after booking, and you can use them any day of your stay. We would see the museums first, so the guide's stories land on what you have just seen.

Live guides speak English, French, German, Italian or Spanish, and the meeting point depends on the language you choose; your booking shows the exact spot near the Jewish Cultural Quarter. The listing gives the whole day as about four hours. Because the walk finishes near the Prinsengracht, it pairs well with a museum visit: book your Anne Frank House slot on annefrank.org for about two hours after the walk starts.

What guests say

Our guide, Jonas, took us through locations of significance to the Jewish experience in the Netherlands under the Nazis. The emphasis on Anne Frank and her family shows why they hid so long while others were less successful. The memorial of names to the more than 102,000 killed by the Nazis visually gives the viewer a sense of the overwhelming losses [...]

Holly explained the Jewish culture and religious sites as we walked . She explained key moments in World war 2 and the rise of anti- Semitism. It was poignant to end outside Anne Frank’s house.

Virginie has a wealth of knowledge, which she presents in an engaging way, and she answered all our questions brilliantly; it was extremely interesting and informative.

Tips before you book

  • Visit the museums first. They close at 17:00, and the walk makes more sense once you have seen the synagogue and the Holocaust Museum.
  • Saturday is out for the Portuguese Synagogue (closed). Fridays it shuts early: 14:00 in November and December, according to the Jewish Cultural Quarter.
  • Anne Frank House entry is a separate timed ticket, sold only on the museum's own website, annefrank.org (EUR 16.50 for adults in 2026). Reserve your slot as soon as your date is released, every Tuesday at 10:00 CET for visits six weeks later. The walk ends near the house, which makes a slot about two hours after your start time an easy fit.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. The walk goes ahead in rain.
  • Bags larger than A4 go in the museum cloakrooms, so travel light on museum day.
