Westermarkt tram stop closed

The tram stop right by the Anne Frank House is out of service until February 2028. The museum is open as normal, and Dam Square is about ten minutes away on foot.

For years the classic directions were simple: take a tram to Westermarkt and walk around the corner. Since 15 February 2025 that stop has had no trams, because of street and bridge works on the route along the Raadhuisstraat.

This post covers what is closed and for how long, the walk from Dam Square and from Central Station, which trams to take now, and how a guided walk can bring you to the museum door.

The quick answer

From 15 February 2025 to February 2028 no tram stops at Westermarkt, the Anne Frank House says. Take any tram to Dam Square and walk about 10 minutes west, or walk the whole way from Amsterdam Central Station in about 20 minutes. The museum entrance is at Westermarkt 20, around the corner from Prinsengracht 263.

Is the Westermarkt tram stop closed?

Yes. From 15 February 2025 to February 2028 there is no tram to the Westermarkt stop, according to the practical information page of the Anne Frank House. Trams still run to Dam Square.

The closure is part of the Oranje Loper, a long city project to renew bridges and streets between the centre and the west of Amsterdam. The local paper De Westkrant reported that trams such as lines 5, 13 and 17 switched to other routes from 15 February 2025.

Only the tram stop is affected. The museum keeps its normal hours, 9:00 to 22:00 daily, and the entrance stays at Westermarkt 20. Some older directions, including a few still online, tell you to take tram 13 or 17 to Westermarkt. Until February 2028, ride to Dam instead.

How do you walk from Dam Square to the Anne Frank House?

Head west behind the Royal Palace and follow the Raadhuisstraat towards the Westerkerk tower. It takes about 10 minutes.

From the square, walk around the Royal Palace to the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal and turn into the Raadhuisstraat. You cross three canals, the Singel, the Herengracht and the Keizersgracht, and the tower of the Westerkerk is ahead of you the whole way. The works along this street can move the footpath from one side to the other, so follow the signs.

At the church you are on the Westermarkt. The museum entrance is at Westermarkt 20, just around the corner from the canal house at Prinsengracht 263. Allow 15 minutes rather than 10 if you have a timed slot, and keep to the pavement: the red lanes are for bikes.

How far is the Anne Frank House from Amsterdam Central Station?

About a 20-minute walk, the museum says. Go via Dam, or take the quieter way south along the canals.

The quick route runs down the Damrak to Dam Square and then west as described above. The calmer one leaves the station to the west and follows the canal ring south along the Prinsengracht, past the gabled houses, until you reach number 263. Both are flat and easy, and both are mostly on cobbles and brick.

Large bags are a problem at the museum: only bags smaller than an A4 sheet go inside, and there is no room for suitcases or big backpacks. If you arrive by train with luggage, leave it at your hotel or at the luggage drop at Central Station before you walk over.

Which tram should you take to the Anne Frank House now?

Any tram that stops at Dam. Then walk the last 10 minutes. The GVB journey planner on gvb.nl or the 9292 app shows the lines running on your day.

Several lines from Central Station stop at Dam, and the diversions during the works have changed more than once since 2025, so check the planner on the day rather than an old route map. From Dam, walk west.

Coming from the south, for example from the Museumplein area, the planner may suggest a different stop with a slightly longer walk. Give yourself a buffer: the museum does not rebook or refund tickets, even for transport problems.

Can a walking tour be your way to the museum?

Yes. Two walks start or end right where you need to be: one meets near Dam and finishes outside the Anne Frank House, the other starts at the Anne Frank Monument on the Westermarkt.

  • The small-group walk in groups of 15 meets at Beursplein 5, next to the bronze bull statue near Dam, and ends outside the Anne Frank House. On the way your guide connects the streets and memorials to Anne's life, her diary and the occupation. The listing advises a museum slot about two hours after the tour starts, so you finish the walk at the door.
  • The guided walk from the Westerkerk meets at the Anne Frank Monument, Westermarkt 74, and leads two to three kilometres through the canal belt to the Jewish Quarter, with diary passages read on the way.
  • The small-group Anne Frank walk starts its one-hour option at the Anne Frank Monument; the two-hour option starts at Waterlooplein in the Jewish Quarter.

Grant, after the Beursplein walk in Oct 2026: "The small group size made it more personable and easy to interact with our guide." Book your museum ticket separately on annefrank.org.

What else is at Westermarkt while you are there?

The Westerkerk, the Anne Frank statue and the Homomonument, all within about 100 m of the museum entrance.

The Westerkerk was built between 1620 and 1631 to a design by Hendrick de Keyser, and Rembrandt was buried there in 1669, though the exact grave is unknown. Anne mentions the tower clock and its carillon in her diary. The statue of Anne Frank by Mari Andriessen stands beside the church and was unveiled in 1977 with Otto Frank present.

By the Keizersgracht, the three pink granite triangles of the Homomonument, opened in 1987, remember everyone persecuted for their homosexuality, including under the Nazi regime. A guide puts all of this into one story. Our walking tours guide compares the routes.
